VMware released Update 4 for vCenter, which includes updates for all components. You can choose between English and new localized versions in Chinese, Japanese and German. I recommend staying with the non-localized version. Windows Server 2008 customization is available from now on, the rest are bug fixes. Please read the release notes to see all fixes, there are lots of.

The automatic update for the vCenter clients is disabled in this release, which is fine with me, because the feature did not work smoothly at all. So you have to update your clients conventionally.

There is a new optional JAVA-based "Performance Overview Plug-In", which you have to install manually. Please read the instructions, because you will need to install a JDK6 and add two environment variables before running the installer, and still the batch file did not run smoothly on our system. The new plugin will display a single view of key performance metrics for CPU, memory, disk, and network without navigating through multiple charts. From my point of view this implementation is absolutely no piece of art. Please, VMware, we do not need any more beta features, we need stable releases!

There is a nice SourceForge Project for the neglected SVMotion feature. Since VMware does not provide any integration into the vCenter GUI, Schley Andrew Kutz developed a vCenter plugin on his own that delivers if you don't like the command line. Great stuff, check it out!

Der VMware VI Client unterstützt ab Version 2.5 U2 "Windows Single-Sign-On (SSO)", d.h. dass die Windows-Authentifizierung wird an den VirtualCenter-Server weitergeleitet, so dass Sie sich nicht erneut einloggen müssen. Um diese Funktion zu aktivieren, müssen Sie den Link zu Ihrem VI Client mit der entsprechenden Option modifizieren:

Wenn Sie Ihre ESX-Server auf die Version 3.5.0 U2 heben, können Sie die neue Hardware-Überwachung von VMware nutzen. Diese ist zwar im Vergleich zu proprietären Agenten nicht so aussagekräftig, weil nicht jeder Server-Typ bislang mit allen verfügbaren Parametern erkannt wird, aber der "Angstfeind RAM Error", den der ESX-Server mit einem gnadenlosen "Purple Screen of Death (PSoD)" quittieren würde, ist auf jeden Fall vorhanden.

Beim Update des VirtualCenter auf U2 wird übrigens nicht automatisch ein Alarm für den Health Status generiert, das müssen Sie manuell erledigen. Die eigentliche Anzeige des Health Status und aller erkannten Systemkomponenten finden Sie unter "Configuration" des jeweiligen Hosts.

Bei upgedateten Systemen haben Sie jedoch das Problem, dass dieser Eintrag fehlt. Die Lösung dafür ist simpel und merkwürdig zugleich: Führen Sie einen Disconnect, anschließend einen Reconnect aus, und schon können Sie auf die neue Funktion zugreifen.
