Das ESX HealthScript für die PowerShell von Ivo Beerens ist eines der besten Skripte, die ich bisher gefunden habe. Ich lasse es wöchentlich automatisiert laufen, um meine Kollegen vom Betriebsteam über die aktuellen Konfigurationsprobleme zu informieren. In der neuen Version 2.0 werden folgende Parameter überprüft:

• VMware ESX server Hardware and version
• VMware vCenter version
• Cluster information (Updated)
• VMware statistics (New)
• Active Snapshots
• CDROMs connected to VMs
• Floppy drives connected to VMs
• Datastores Information such as free space
• RDM information (New)
• VM information such as VMware tools version, processor and memory limits
• VMs and their datastore (New)
• VMware timesync enabled
• Percentage disk space used inside the VM (New)
• VC error logs last 5 days (New)

Eric Siebert hat einen offenen Brief an VMware veröffentlicht, der mir grundsätzlich sehr gut gefällt und sicherlich auch vielen anderen Engineers aus dem Herzen spricht. Daher möchte ich seine Anliegen an dieser Stelle auszugsweise veröffentlichen, denen ich mich ausdrücklich anschließe:

1. Please slow down a bit. Produce a quality bug-free product and not try to rush out new versions, features and functionality until they are ready. Stop with the experimental features and only put them in the finished product unless they are ready and you are going to fully support them. I know it’s almost impossible to produce 100% bug-free code, especially as your product code grows larger and larger in size, but please catch the major ones that can cause outages for your customers. If you can’t slow down, at least hire more QA personnel and do more public Betas so your customers can help you with this. You can’t afford another mishap like Microsoft is currently experiencing with their Zune music players.

2. On the release of VI4 (or vSphere as you now call it): This should be an exciting upgrade and further distance you from your competitors, but please don’t release it before it’s fully done, polished and tested. I can wait an extra month or two if necessary.

3. Please, no more product name changes. Enough is enough with the name changes! You’re just confusing your customers and complicating things. Instead, get your marketing department to do more to attract new customers, keep your current ones and fight all the HyperV vs. ESX misinformation that Microsoft releases. Also please leave ESX named ESX, I know your marketing department is probably itching to change it so something like vHypervisor but resist and leave it as ESX. (For those who don’t know ESX stands for Elastic Sky X which was the name used in the development of the original version.)

4. More competitive pricing. You have lots of competition now and the hypervisor is becoming commoditized. Giving away ESXi for free was a good start. Why not give ESX away for free also and sell all the advanced features as add-on’s? You also have plenty of automation and management products that you can sell to complement it. Also, please reduce the price of Workstation. It’s too expensive for many. You’d probably sell a lot more if you reduced the price so it was close to the price of Fusion.

5. On VMworld presentations: Please go back to releasing these to non-attendees after the show ends as you did in previous years. Not everyone can afford to go to it and the information in the sessions would be valuable to both your current and potential customers. It’s to your benefit to educate your customers and provide as much information to them as possible. At the very least, allow people to purchase a subscription to the sessions so they can access them right away after the show ends.

Sun Microsystems bietet mit der neuen Version ihrer quelloffenen Virtualisierungsplattform Sun xVM VirtualBox 2.0 ein neues Support-Modell an. Sun hatte die Open-Source-Desktop-Virtualisierungslösung im Frühjahr durch Übernahme von Innotek in sein Portfolio integriert. Für Unternehmenskunden, die die Lösung professionell einsetzen wollen, bietet Sun jetzt die sogenannte "xVM VirtualBox Enterprise Support Subscription" an.

Sie erhalten damit 24-Stunden-Support von Sun. So nutzt beispeilsweise das Auswärtige Amt den Hypervisor auf mehr als 12.000 PCs in den Deutschen Botschaften. Inzwischen wurde xVM VirtualBox weltweit mehr als 6,5 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen und erreicht eine Quote von 15.000 Downloads pro Tag.

Der Open-Source-Hypervisor unterstützt als Host alle gängigen Betriebssysteme, darunter Linux, Windows, Solaris sowie Mac OS X. Als Gastsysteme werden zusätzlich noch OS/2, DOS-basierte Betriebssysteme, Linux (Kernel 2.2), NetWare sowie diverse BSD-Derivate unterstützt. Zu den Features der neuen Version gehört der 64-Bit Gast-Support, eine neue Nutzerschnittstelle für Mac-Plattformen und verbesserte Netzwerkfunktionen für Mac OS X und Solaris. Außerdem bietet die VirtualBox 2.0 gesteigerte Performance, insbesondere auf AMD-Prozessoren.

VMware hat den ESX-Hypervisor innerhalb des "Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVP)" qualifizieren lassen. ESX 3.5u2 ist damit der erste Hypervisor, der in diesem Programm erscheint. Damit können VMware-Anwender kooperativen Support von Microsoft für ihre virtuellen Windows Server und Microsoft-Applikationen erhalten.

Das SVP ermöglicht es Softwareanbietern, Virtualisierungs-Software auf Windows Servern zu testen und zu validieren. Unter diesem Programm bietet Microsoft kooperativen technischen Support für Kunden, die ihre Produkte auf validierter Server-Virtualisierungssoftware von Drittanbietern einsetzen. Kunden mit gültigem Microsoft-Support-Vertrag, die Windows Server-basierte Applikationen unter VMware ESX 3.5u2 einsetzen, haben die Option auf den kooperativen technischen Support des Redmonder Konzerns.

Ein Fehler im VMware ESX Server 3.5.0 U2 kann folgende Auswirkungen auf Ihre Produktion haben:

• VMs können nicht mehr eingeschaltet werden
• VMs können nicht aus dem "Suspend Mode" aufgeweckt werden
• VMotion Migrationen scheitern

Die Fehlermeldung im vmware.log lautet:

This product has expired. Be sure that your host machine's date and time are set correctly. There is a more recent version available at the VMware web site: http://www.vmware.com/info?id=4.

Module License Power on failed.

Das bedeutet konkret, dass Ihre Lizenzen am 12.08.08 auslaufen werden, falls Sie das Update 2 einsetzen. Der Fehler wurde vom VMware Team bereits lokalisiert und es wird schnellstmöglich ein Patch bereitgestellt. Bis dahin empfiehlt VMware das Update nicht durchzuführen.

Es gibt einen Workaround, den ich jedoch nicht guten Gewissens empfehlen kann: Prinzipiell ist es möglich, die Uhr auf dem ESX-Server kurzfristig auf ein Datum vor dem 10.08.08 zurückzustellen, um anschließend die VMs starten zu können. Falls Sie jedoch wie ich auf eine Zeitsynchronisation Ihrer VMs über die VMware Tools mit dem ESX-Host setzen, kann ich Ihnen nur davon abraten, da das Umstellen der Uhrzeit unabsehbare Auswirkungen auf Ihre Applikationen haben könnte.

Ich empfehle Ihnen heute noch alle VMs einzuschalten, die Sie in den nächsten Tagen benötigen könnten und auf keinen Fall VMs herunterzufahren oder zu suspenden, bis ein Patch für diesen Fehler verfügbar ist.
